Top Tips for Bridal Underwear with Rigby and Peller

Last weekend our very own bride-to-be, co-founder Sarah-Leigh headed on down for a bridal lingerie fitting at the esteemed Rigby and Peller. Choosing the Westfield London branch for this momentous occasion (and lingerie conundrum - we'll be honest), we were greeted with the friendliest of stylists to cater to our needs and a store full of lacy treats ready to peruse.

 photo IMG_7430_zpsde014fe4.jpg photo IMG_7428_zps35f2df79.jpg photo IMG_7431_zpsa4e22d87.jpg

If you're not familiar with the brand, Rigby and Peller is a world-wide destination retailer synonymous with discretion and excellence. In 1960 the Royal Warrant was granted to Rigby & Peller by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II and in 1982 owner June Kenton became the grantee of the Royal Warrant as Corsetiere to H.M. Queen Elizabeth II. They now have eight stores across the South of the UK.

Now we know our HBBS readers enjoy some practical advise, and so, here's some titbits from our visit - an essential guide to getting your lingerie perfect on that all important day.
  • Always seek the advise of your dress fitter on the best type of underwear for your dress.
  • If you haven't been measured for a bra recently now is the time - you want to feel secure and comfortable on your big day so make sure your underwear is the perfect fit.
  • If you need a low-backed option, go as tight as is comfortable - you may not believe it but it will feel more secure - and that's extremely important as the most photographed woman of the day!
  • If trying a Basque-style bra, lean in to it before fastening for a precise fit.
  • Be careful of underwear seams if your dress is tight-fitting or in a light-weight fabric. Do your best to try your underwear first and take to a dress fitting.
  • Be careful on contrasting colours - that powder blue underwear set may be gorgeous but the silhouette showing through your dress won't be!
  • Lastly, take your time. You want to feel like the best possible version of you at your wedding and so take the time to find the right style and shape for you. Try new things and don't be afraid to ask questions during your fitting.

Introducing...Katherine Louise

Next up in our introducing series is Hampshire make up artist Kat...over to you Kat...

Looking your best on your wedding day goes without saying, and even if you're a dab hand with the liner, sometimes you just need someone else to take the stress out of it for you. That's where I come in!

As a friendly, professional make up artist I use my skills to make you look your best on your big day. However much or however little you want, I'll work with you (and any other members of the wedding party) to create a look that you're happy with.

Keeping everything in place all day is a key part of what I do, and using high end products with a layering and setting technique is what really means you won't have to worry.

I'm always hearing that make up artists use too much or too little product on brides, and I'm more than aware of how much of a mistake that is. I'm there to enhance what you've already got - not mask it! Working with brides to make them feel confident is great - I love the atmosphere and the anticipation on a wedding day, and it's always handy to have another pair of hands to help do up the dress!

If you're looking for a make up artist who blends into the background whilst making sure you look better than ever, give me a shout.

  1. photo winch_zps45200289.jpg

So Sunday 16th June is shaping up to be a pretty special day - not only is it Father's Day, but also, the beautiful city of Winchester is playing host to two very special wedding events. What could be better than a  celebratory morning with the dutiful Father-of-the-Bride, followed by an afternoon of the town's treasures and culinary delights?

In our previous post, 'Where to take your Dad in Winchester after the Bridal Boot Sale (it is Fathers Day after all!)', we mentioned some of our favourite Winchester hang outs. Here though, we focus on the all important events taking place on Sunday 16th. Not only is the next edition of the Hampshire Bridal Boot Sale on at Milner Hall, St Peter Street, but also (new to Winchester, new for organisers The Vintage Parade) is The Nostalgic Wedding Fair.

The Nostalgic Wedding Fair have collaborated with a crew of wedding specialists to capture the essence of vintage, nostalgia and alternative options for those blushing brides.

The fair is curated to ensure quality and diverse products are provided at each event, with a variety of hand picked exhibitors for you. They have found fabulously retro sepia hued photographers, quirky quaint stationers, indulgent wedding cakes, blossomed bouquets and vintage styled dresses, accessories .....plus so much more!

After picking up those perfect finishing touches from the Bridal Boot Sale's creative newly-weds and top tips from our expert suppliers, why not head on down to The Nostalgic Wedding Fair at Winchester Guildhall, transformed into a hive of eclectic, beautiful, fashionable and vintage wedding utopia. There will also be live vintage performers, a beauty parlour, vintage ice cream van and all the trimmings for you to enjoy. Plus, come along to see the Burlesque show to spice up your hen party or two vintage themed entertainers and vintage themed dancers to demonstrate to prospective couples some 'vintage' dance moves.

Where to take your Dad in Winchester after the Bridal Boot Sale (it is Fathers Day after all!)

We're always surprised at the amount of Dad's we see coming along to the Hampshire Bridal Boot Sale - we just think it fab how many of them are so involved in the planning of their daughters wedding. Our next Hampshire Bridal Boot Sale is being held on Fathers Day. But we're open from 10am-1pm, which gives you plenty of time to take your Dad out for lunch afterwards (See what we did there?) Our very own Karen gives her top tips of the best places to go on her blog The Peony Tree every week, so we thought we'd get her to share some of her top tips on where in Winchester to take your Dad after you've been to see us.

Ginger Two for Tea is a lovely little Boutique café in the centre of Winchester. Pop in for a great lunchtime bite to eat - sandwiches, salads, a cheese and wine platter. The perfect place to update the Father of the Bride on how you'll be styling all of your Bridal Boot Sale purchases!

The Corner House (pictured above) is quite literally around the corner from Milner Hall, and one of my favourite places to have lunch. The décor itself provides serious wedding styling inspiration - expect to be wowed by the vintage suitcases, flowers is crystal vases, and mismatched furniture. The food is also amazing...think big traditional roasts and sticky toffee pudding for desert. Dad will be super impressed, trust me!

The Wykeham Arms is a Winchester local's favourite. If you've not discovered it yet, then you should really do so! Tucked away between the Cathedral and the College, this place is a little gem. Take a seat at School tables and chairs in the main bar area, and make sure you get your Dad a pint of ale in - he'll get a free tankard and bottle of beer when you dine on Fathers Day too! Brownie points all round!!

If you're really looking to impress Dad, then why not take him to the Michelin starred The Black Rat in Chesil Street. Serving Modern British food, this place is really special. We especially like the outdoor tables, which seat you in little huts (don't worry there is heating if the British weather takes hold!)

Spotlight On... Bridal Fashion

As Bridal Fashion Week took over New York recently, a host of the biggest names in fashion, couture and bridal wear took to the runways. In amongst the yards of lace, tulle and taffeta, a couple of key trends emerged, full of grace, glamour and nostalgia.

Thanks to the epic arrival of The Great Gatsby, the world of style is awash with sumptuous 1920s and 30s looks. From flapper-esque frills and feathers to aged antiquities adorned with flowers, Daisy Buchanan sets the tone for this season's wedding musts.

Alongside these decadent looks, a prim 1950s theme was evident, evoking the glamour of Grace Kelly and our very own Duchess of Cambridge. With high lace necks, full length sleeves and voluminous skirts, emphasis was firmly on the feminine form, albeit classically chic and beautifully polished.
